Small Craft Warning Über pils – Heavy Seas (Clipper City Brewing)

Who doesn’t love pirates? You need only look to this summer’s blockbuster, or the number of sites, video games, or books on the subject to see that we love pirates. And let’s not forget that September 19 is Talk Like A Pirate Day.

Small Craft Warning Über pilsHeavy Seas is one of the brand names by Clipper City Brewing in Baltimore, Maryland. Each of their beers features a pirate theme and their slogan is: “It’s Heavy Seas that separate the men from the boys!” They offer six different styles. Their pilsner offering is called Small Craft Warning. From the label (best read aloud with a heavy pirate accent):

This here pounder has a fine layer of yeast at her bottom. It won’t send you to Davy Jones’ locker, but will protect your brew from the rigors of life at sea!

The color is darker than I expected, a rich caramel. It creates a nice head with very tiny bubbles. I won’t say it’s lightly-hopped, but compared to the Sunshine Pils I had yesterday it seems so. Robust malt flavor with a hint of fruit essences. Considering that the brewer describes it as a “pilsner style bock lager” this isn’t surprising. This is a beer with hair on its chest.

At 7.5% ABV you probably don’t want to suck them down. I can tell you, though, that after a hard morning of mowing my lawn, this was very refreshing. I’ll give it a three out of four.
