Each year we each take turns (more, or less) hosting our Octoberfest festivities at our home with our families kindly accepting of our antics. This year I will be traveling down to Maryland to Al’s new home which happens to be a first time hosting for Al. Hosting adds even more excitement and I can tell Al is excited by all the emails he sends us - and the anticipation just adds to the whole experience.
Only one day until the fun and games begin! BUT, just a warning to those of you who might be a beer drinker and also hooked on one of those online video games like World of Warcraft, don’t place the keg in arms reach of you computer… it’s too easy to over do it as one of my friends almost did that year.
Another danger of Octoberfest is men cooking & cleaning. Now, my wife is usually happy when I host, because I know that we make such a mess, it is easier for me to just clean everything under the sun. But, there was also the year of burnt cookware beyond saving. Not that men aren’t great chef’s, but put a bunch of guys together who haven’t seen each other in a year and fine cuisine comes close to the bottom of the list. (Want to know what a steamer pot looks like after being on the stove for 20 minutes with no water in it…? it’s not pretty)
Next year, I’m hoping it is my turn to host again (since I’ve bought my wife a new steamer) and I hope that the addition I am in the middle of putting on my house is ready. The room is being designed with Octoberfest in mind. Well, ok, I’m designing it primarily with the family in mind, but I’m thinking about Octoberfest as well. It is geared around being a room to socialize, be comfy, and play. You know… the good stuff in life.
Which brings us full circle… Octoberfest is one of those occasions that is not all about beer, but it is all about life.
