Choose That St. Patty’s Day Beer!

A follow up to the conversation I started (with myself)…

I gave more thought about choosing a St. Patrick’s Day beer while browsing through my local candy store the other day. There are actually very few Irish beer styles to choose from, and certainly, a limited choice of brews imported from Ireland. My eye kept getting drawn toward the Wexford Irish Cream Ale, which is a fine ale very similar to Boddington’s Pub Ale. But, there is nothing much Irish about it except the name. Brewed in the U.K., this smooth ale that comes with a nitro widget is really an English ordinary bitter. Whether you consider its taste simple, or somewhat plain, why not make it a choice for St. Patrick’s Day?

I also thought about how St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated around the world. The United States, a.k.a. the melting pot, is less alien to the holiday and rather a large part of it. That said, if you are from the U.S., why not celebrate with fine ales and lagers from the homeland. Why not everyone enjoy their finest brews from wherever you are from?

Here’s another list:

  1. I just had the Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout last night. That is a GREAT beer. Though I think it would make for a short St. Pat’s day if I chose to drink that one. It’s not what I would call a “session” beer.

  2. Well, no, the Brooklyn BCS is decidedly NOT an Irish stout.

I’ve been drinking nothing BUT stout for the last month or so. I think I might skip it for St. Pat’s and have a Harp instead.

  3. Technically, the Brooklyn is a Russian Imperial, but you would never know there is 10% abv in it. Just yum!

But yeah… I can see if you are hosting a party that serving up many bottles of the Brooklyn may not be such a good idea. *hic*

I just like that nothing says American made like a beer from Brooklyn.
