Beer blogs are kinda like beer itself. There’s a wider variety to choose from than most people think until they start to research the topic. Some are deep and rich, others light and refreshing, while some are…well, I’m sure they’re enjoyed by their fans. There are some that I like to visit only occasionally, some I’ve tried once and never want to go back to, and others that I simply go to again and again.
Some of the blogs we read, and enjoy, are over there in our sidebar (helpfully labeled “Beerroll”). However, like beer, I know there are more out there than I am aware of, and some of those may be some of my favorites, if only I could find them. Oh, sure, there’s a decent sized listing over at the Open Directory Project, but that’s still akin to going into a beer retailer and blindly trying to find a new beer to try. Then there’s things like Technorati’s tag and description searches, but that’s like trying to find a good beer in a pile of bottles with all the labels removed. One needs more information than that.
And so we turn to you, dear reader. We harbor no illusions that your relationship to Hop Talk is a monogamous one. We know you’re visiting other beer blogs on the side. Or maybe visiting us on the side. It’s okay.
Tell us, though, what are your favorite blogs? Why? How do you find beer blogs to read? Do you have a beer blog of your own? Tell us! Tell the world! Help me find a new favorite blog to read. (If we really like it, we’ll add it to our “Beerroll”.) As I’ve mentioned before, a personal recommendation is one of the best ways to find a new beer to try. Finding a new beer blog should be no different.

I’d be lying if I didn’t say that my favorite beer blog was my own (www.mondaynightbrewery.com). Essentially we’re 3-4 guys homebrewing our way into a viable business. We hope to open a micro in 2 years or so and we’re chronicling our journey to the promised land.
That said, there are a few lesser known blogs that I’ve been enjoying lately.
1) Bostonbeerman’s blog: http://bostonbeerman.blogspot.com/ I like his perspective and challenging questions (especially the ones related to marketing!). He does a good job of interspersing beer reviews with more social content.
2) Foureyed (Beer) Geek’s blog: http://thefoureyedbeergeek.blogspot.com/ This guy is just starting down the homebrewing path and it has been very interesting (and entertaining) to share in his initial struggles and successes.
Well, Jonathon beat me to the punch in plugging both my blog and his, which I find very entertaining.
You’ve also already listed the Brew Lounge, the blog I blame, err credit for starting my own blog.
My friend Nate has a good beer blog that covers a nice diversity of beer topics, both local and world-wide.
First off thanks for the ad to the sidebar! I appreciate that you guys like my blog. As far as what I read, let me premise this with a quick differentiation on beer blogging.
From what I have see there are three basic kinds of brew blogs, the tasting, the making (homebrew if you will) and the beer news. Now obviously there is overlap, but for the most part I have found that the beer blogs out there, the majority of the content falls into one of the three categories.
My blog has been focused on homebrew, so here are the four
http://badbensnanobrewery.blogspot.com/index.html
http://blog.geirove.org/index.html
http://www.tedbrews.com/index.html
http://job.zamoose.org/ (a little slow to update with new content)
http://sudspundit.blogspot.com/index.html (this is a mix local brews news and homebrew)
Now I am a fan of hop-talk for my beer news and tasting. It looks as though your blog roll covers all the brew news and most of the tasting I do, but here are a couple of others:
http://bieredetable.com/ (this guy had one of the most comprehensive blogs on beer tasting I have ever seen, but has gone under for the last month or so)
http://thomsbeerblog.blogspot.com/index.html (this guy does some great reviews of beers from all over)
So that about sums up my blog reading. I am working on a sidebar for my blog so I will be sure to ad hop-talk. Thanks again.
Travis
Don’t forget the Champagne of Blogs!
With such entries as “Hamdog Test Kitchen,” and “Mouthful of Metolius: River brewing,” we cover a lot of bases … if by “bases” you mean “bars,” and by “cover” you mean “drink too much at.”
Allow me to shamelessly plug my blog: Homebrew and Chemistry. I am not a brewing chemist, but a chemist who brews. I love the science related to making great beer and am learning more and more everyday. If you like the science of brewing, check it out and feel free to add your 2 cents.
I also read Beercraft Blog and Ionia Ales.
My Web site, “Dowd On Drinks,” is broken into beer, wine, spirits and non-alcoholic drinks notebooks. To go directly to the beer one, you can link to http://brewsnotebook.blogspot.com or you can go to the main site page at http://billdowd.com
Thanks.
Ooops. I just noticed you already have me listed (as I do you).
Sorry about that. Incidentally, you might be interested in my latest post, since it entails using gluten-free bres in a mixed-tasting.
See? I knew you guys would come through. There are several that you all mentioned that I wasn’t aware of.
You’re right about there being lots of beer blogs out there; too many to keep up with, really. I read as many as I can but there are only so many hours in the day! One of my favorites, which you already have in your roll is the Brookston Beer Bulletin.
My beer blog falls into the news category of the three categories described above. So, I keep a Google alert going which serves me daily headlines and blog entries containing key phrases like beer, ale, lager, brewery, etc. (That’s how I found this entry. I’m behind and doing some Sunday inbox cleaning.)
I’ve also recently started writing for a beer and liquor blog so I added another alert for phrases like rum, whiskey, whisky, etc. This usually give me plenty to write about and keeps me more or less plugged into the blogging community - when I stay caught up, that is!
Cheers!
