Session #3: The Mysterious Misunderstood Mild

Posted on 08:01, May 4th, 2007 by Al E.

The Session - Beer Blogging FridayI was going to title this post: “In search of…Milds”

Because I looked high and low, and I couldn’t find any.

Jay Brooks helpfully posted a list of American-brewed Milds, but none of my nearby (and not so nearby) retailers had any of them. No English-brewed Mild imports, either. A couple of brewpubs not too far away occasionally have Milds in their seasonal rotation, but none of them have it at present. I couldn’t find anything even close to the style.

So, I’m bummed. I’m only posting this in order to direct our loyal readers to Session Central, where you may find posts from people luckier (read: with better beer kung fu) than me (or who live in the UK) discussing this traditional, but disappearing, style.

When Hop Talk hosts the Session I am tempted to make it tasting notes on Kumis, the drink made from fermented mare’s milk popular in many parts of Central Asia and Mongolia. “Revenge is a drink best served at cellar temperature.”

If you’re interested, I picked up Moorhouse’s Black Cat dark mild at Chevy Chase Wine & Spirits, which is probably my new favorite beer shop: http://www.chevychasewine.com

(also re: your Brickskeller comment at the Brookston blog - as I’m sure you know as well as I do, being on the list means absolutely nothing about whether or not it’s actually in the bar. When I go there these days, for every order I make I need to have at least one backup in mind, since it seems like half of that mammoth list is never available.)

Hey, thanks. I’ll definitely check that out. It’s a bit of a trip for me (unless I drive to work) but more options is always good.

As for the Brickskeller, I’ve only been the once, so I didn’t want to make any assumptions. But, yeah, at least two of the beers my wife and I asked for weren’t available. In their defense, though, one of them is a seasonal that wasn’t out yet. (Troegs Sunshine Pils)

I searched for milds as well and came up with zilch.
