Session #4 announced: Local Brews

The Session - Beer Blogging FridayFor the next installment of The Session, snekse of Gastronomic Fight Club, has announced the topic for June, deviating from the trend of tasting a single style:

Local Brews

The idea here is to be as helpful as possible for visitors to your area. What is the beer/brewery/brewpub that you feel is quintessential to your city? What do the locals drink? What could a tourist drink that would make them feel like they’ve found something special; something that they’re going to miss when they go home?

  • You can pick anything commercially made within 150 miles of your house, but try to pick the brewery or brewpub closest to your house (NOTE: the average American lives within 10 miles of a craft brewery).
  • You can select any beer or even a sampler if you want.
  • If you select a single beer, let us know why you choose this beer (e.g. favorite, seasonal, limited edition, best seller).
  • Preferably you’ll shy away from beers with wide distribution outside your immediate area.

Ah, now this is something I can get into. I’m a strong believer in “buying local” and try to patronize all kinds of local businesses, not just the ones that sell beer.

150 miles is a big range. I suppose he’s being nice to the people in places like Texas. I don’t need to go 150 miles. Within 20 miles I have at least two brewpubs. Within 50 more like a dozen or so. About the same number of craft breweries, too.

My problem, then, will be how to choose among all that bounty. I think a trip to a brewpub is in order. Preferably one I haven’t been to before. I hear a Gordon Biersch has just opened in Rockville. I prefer not to go to chains, though. And the one closest to my house has been written about on this blog before. No matter, it’s got some great atmosphere there, so I’ll enjoy this particular project.

snekse has also included some detailed instructions on how to get the information to him, so be sure to read his post. He’s also accepting notes from people who don’t have blogs and will include their information as well.
