Heller Hound Maibock – Flying Dog Brewery

Heller Hound Bock Beer “Anti-Spring” - Flying Dog BreweryThe Summer Solstice is later this week. The Heller Hound Maibock is a new offering from Flying Dog Brewery.

It’s also sub-titled “Anti-Spring”, a sentiment that reminds me of my brother. I wish I’d discovered it earlier in the season, but any time is a good time for a beer, eh?

Here’s what they say about it:

…[A] crisp, malty Helles Bock, brewed with a combination of Vienna and Munich Malts. With a rich mouth feel and a subtle hop finish, Heller Hound Bock is the perfect brew for toasting the sun’s return.

It is a nice amber color with some orange highlights. The head recedes to a thin layer of foam relatively quickly. Nice robust body, with a good malty flavor and just enough hop bitterness to make it refreshing and cut the malt sweetness.

Bocks aren’t usually on my list of usual styles, and it’s probably a bit warm for it, but I found it rather good. I know I’ll be looking for it next spring. Recommended.

  1. I had one of these lat month and enjoyed it thoroughly. It’s surprisingly refreshing for a bock — which makes it nice for warmer weather.

  2. This beer is coming to a close on its season according to Flying Dog’s site. The offering for June and July will be their wheat beer.
