I was at bar-b-cue on the Fourth of July and the hosts had Heineken that come in those cute cans that resemble a keg. We’ve discussed in length before about the drawbacks of packaging beer in clear or green bottles and the advantages of cans. Heineken has always been the poster child for skunky beer as they seemed to take the image of their packaging more seriously than the taste of their beer. So, I was actually eager to take a taste of Heineken from a can, hopefully sans skunks.
As expected, this beer didn’t taste like Pepé Le Pew. It was clean and crisp and very refreshing, much like a cold club soda. You could faintly taste the malt and hops. I would have to do a side-by-side comparison to determine if it was any better than Budweiser, or about the same. With that, I found it passable and without another choice of beer to have, I toughed it out. That lands it directly on a “two” of the unofficial Hop-Talk beer rating system.

Good grief, you must have been thirsty! Were they serving alum burgers with salt dressing at the BBQ? I’m afraid that ‘being the same as Budweiser’ would get it a minus vote from me. Next time, go for the club soda with a kerosene chaser - it’s possibly better for you… and there may even be more hops in the kerosene than in the Heineken
Interestingly, Heineken is the best selling beer in the world outside of its home market. Bud sells more globally simply because its domestic market is so large, and Heineken’s so small.
Heineken also sells a 5 liter mini-keg with a built-in tap and CO2 cartridge. Bitberger and Warsteiner also have 5 L cans w/o the CO2 cartridge. I think its a pretty cool package when you have a party. I wish more micros used this kind of packaging.
Heineken had some great radio Keg Can commercials in the early 2000’s. My favorite was where a bully, with a strong European accent, called the Keg Can “weak”, “Puny”, and then kicks the can, only to be agonizing because he hurt his great toe. Not to encringe on publishers rights or perform an illegal act, but anyone know where I can download that mp3?
