It’s not exactly what one would call “Porter weather” in this area of the U.S. of late. As is typical of August, we’re regular reaching into the high 90s in degrees Fahrenheit. (That’s mid- to upper-thirties for you European Celsius types.)
However, my air conditioning works. Heck, in both my office and on the train during my commute it works a little too well. And, since I’ve been holding on to it for longer than I’d originally intended, I decided I’d better have this Old-Style Porter from St. Peter’s Brewery. (I still love the story of this unusual bottle.)
Eurobrews, the specialty importer, gives this description of the Old-Style Porter:
Old Style Porter 5.1% ABV
This fine beer is a blend of a mature old ale and a younger light beer – just as a true Porter should be. The marriage produces an extremely characterful brew which is dark in colour and complex in taste. Gold Medal Winner, What’s Brewing Awards 2004
It’s a medium to dark brown with a strong, off-white head. The impression I get from the aroma is of candied almonds. The nuttiness really comes through in the flavor, which also has a nice—not overpowering—roasted flavor. Nice medium body.
That’s good. As it’s gotten a bit warmer even more flavor comes through. That’s a nice porter. When it gets around to “porter weather”, I’ll be looking this one up again. Too bad it’s an import, and priced as such.
If it’s any comfort, my St Peterses travel a much shorter distance than yours and are still chuffing expensive. This is the best in their bottled range, IMO.
