Beer in space

While a couple of astronauts said they flew drunk, and NASA says that they haven’t turned up anything about alcohol abuse among astronauts for at least a decade, space wasn’t always “dry”.

Anna Davison examines such examples on NewScientist, including Buzz Aldrin’s communion on the moon and a graduate student’s experiment on fermentation in space.

Beyond the challenge of producing beer in space is the problem of serving it, says Jonathan Clark, a former flight surgeon and now the space medicine liaison for the National Space Biomedical Research Institute in Houston, Texas, US.

Without gravity, bubbles don’t rise, so “obviously the foam isn’t going to come to a head”, Clark told New Scientist.

Apparently the cosmonauts on the Mir space station enjoyed a bit of a drink and were perturbed to learn the International Space Station is dry. Worse, carbonated beverages are basically a bad idea, because there’s no gravity to pull the liquid down and force the carbonation up. Who wants people to have “wet burps” in a small, enclosed space?

Beer in space: A short but frothy history

A sad day for beerdom

Michael Jackson, the Beer Hunter, who became required reading for anyone ready to move up to better beer, has died.

A sad day indeed.

National Public Radio: Pairing beer with food

National Public RadioI am an NPR junkie. I can’t listen to commercial radio any more. I can’t even listen to music on the radio any more. If I don’t get to hear Morning Edition and/or All Things Considered I feel like I don’t know what’s going on in the world.

This past Sunday, Bonny Wolf (host of ‘Kitchen Window,’ NPR’s food podcast) did a piece on the emergence of craft beer and pairing with food. While she is primarily channeling author Lucy Saunders, it is certainly nice to hear something even-handed and educational about beer.

Stout and Szechuan? Marrying Beer and Food

Everybody knows that beer goes well with hot dogs.

Some people even know that dark stout is better than champagne with oysters.

But Imperial IPA with creme brulee? This is a new one — at least to me.

Give a listen.

More online homebrewing resources

Sometimes it seems that the Internet and the World Wide Web were invented just for me. I’m online constantly. If I can’t check my e-mail for a day I get twitchy. Whenever I come across something I don’t know, a quick Google search or browsing the relevant category at the Open Directory Project usually gets me what I need. Wikipedia and Snopes are also common destinations. I could go on and on.

So it is only natural that when I’m looking to expand my beer horizons I would turn to the Web. Some of the sites I’ve found useful (and not-so-useful) I’ve shared with you. (Check out our “Resources” category.) I recently asked the members of F.O.A.M. what online brewing resources they use and recommend.

Home Brew Digest
Just about everyone mentioned this.

How To Brew
The companion site to the book of the same name and a great all around resource for the techniques of brewing. You can even download the entire first edition of the book for free.

BrewBoard
A great discussion board with an unbelievable amount of knowledge. Ask any question about brewing and you’ll get a couple answers from guys that had the same problem.

American Homebrewers Association
And, specifically, AHA Tech Talk (AHA members only).

Morebeer’s Brew Chat
Another great resource discussion forum.

The Brewing Network

Brew Monkey

What are some of your favorite homebrewing resources?

Update: Ron also did a post on homebrewing resources.

Drink beer. Stay regular.

Stylish BeerIn my youth, I used laugh at those commercials for Metamucil and similar topics.

I’m not so youthful anymore. At the very least I’m not laughing. There’s nothing like being on cholesterol medication to remind you that you can’t eat (or drink) like an eighteen-year-old any more.

Always on the lookout for news about beer and health, I see that Korean brewer, Hite (Korean) is claiming that their new “S” beer has a gram of fiber in every 200 milliliters. Probably not a fifth of your typical fiber supplement, but I suppose it can’t hurt.

Quick links

Here’s a few items that caught my eye in the last few days.

The Bronze Age of Irish Brewing (Brookston Beer Bulletin)

Mysterious horseshoe-shaped mounds that dot the Irish countryside and date back to the Bronze age may very well be brewery locations.

Bears Snack on Man at Beer Festival (Hail the Ale)

A beerfest in Serbia turned tragic when the partially-eaten body of a patron is found in the bear cage. The bears are reluctant to give up their treasure. Multiple cellular phones, beer cans, and other items were found in the cage. I am reminded of the old joke about two hunters who get surprised by a bear and start to run.

“Why are you running? We’ll never outrun that bear.”

“I don’t have to outrun the bear. I just have to outrun you.”

Wis. Lawmakers Back Beer Industry (The “Beer Me” Blog)

Milwaukee isn’t the “Beer City” for nothing.

Great Frederick Fair Homebrew Competition

Frederick County, Maryland, is still a primarily rural county, with towns scattered amongst the farmland. So the Great Frederick Fair, being held this year September 14 through 22, is still a big deal.

Once again, in addition to judging of vegetables, fruits, hay, and other agricultural products, there is a homebrew competition. Here are the details:

Entries for the Great Frederick Fair homebrew competition are due on Saturday, September 8th, not the day of judging.

The brewer should bring the beer to the entry location at the fairgrounds that day between 10 AM and 2 PM. Pre-registration via the web is encouraged, as this will save time at the check-in station. The entry fee is $6. That gets you three entries on the “entry ticket”. If you have more entries, you need to pay for another ticket.

The brewer should bring two bottles of each entry. Entries with only one bottle can still be judged, but may not be eligible for prizes.

Great Frederick Fair Household and Farm & Garden On-line Registration System

Official rules from the Farm & Garden Department [PDF] (scroll down to section 12/page 10)

No entries from me, but I know that several members of F.O.A.M. are entering, and have been very successful in the past. Several other members a BJCP-certified beer judges, and will be helping judge the competition.

Beer truck explodes

Saw some news out of Canada the other night. A truck carrying beer crashed and exploded into flames, snarling highway traffic for hours.

Globe and Mail: Beer truck explodes, stalling 401 for hours

Fortunately, the driver was able to escape before the cab burst into flames. He has serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. No one else was seriously hurt.

The best part of the article is the last line:

Unconfirmed media reports last night said the truck was carrying Budweiser beer.
