Turkey travels

AAA predicts that a record 38.7 million Americans will travel more that fifty miles from home this Thanksgiving holiday, with about 80% traveling by car. This in spite of record-high gasoline prices.

My brother Don is coming to visit us (a trip of 200 miles). He’ll be in good company.

Ron and I wish you all a safe, satiating, and joyous Thanksgiving.

I, for one, have much to be thankful for.

  1. Wasn’t there a movie with John Candy in about travelling home for Thanksgiving or something?

I must say it’s a bit rich that Americans lecture the rest of the world for not working hard enough, yet with Thanksgivings, Labour Day, Christmas and Easter, the US closes down for business four times a bloody year!

It’s certainly causing us problems in my office…

  2. You’re probably thinking of “Planes, Trains & Automobiles“.

There are 10 U.S. Federal Holidays: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr’s Birthday, Washington’s Birthday (aka Presidents’ Day), Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas.

Most people, however, don’t get MLK day, Presidents’ Day, Columbus Day or Veteran’s Day. (I’m a contractor for the government, so I do. Woot!)

Of course, unlike folks in the U.K., we DON’T get Good Friday, Easter Monday, or Boxing Day off. And what’s with the “just for the hell of it” banking holidays, two of which are in May?

How much paid vacation–excuse me, holiday–time do Europeans get? Most people get two weeks’ worth, and it takes five to seven years at one job just to earn another. Even then, there are plenty of people who don’t take all of their time.
