CNN on homebrewing?

It’s not often you find mention of beer on mainstream media sites like CNN.

CNNThat is, of course, not counting those news items where consumption of beer led directly to a perpetrator’s lack of judgment, a hijacked beer truck, or a major brewer’s financial numbers.

No, except for the occasional puff piece about the increasing popularity of craft beer, there’s very little else out there in places where people who aren’t beer freaks like us would find it.

Surprising then, was this little gem I ran across recently:

CNN In Depth - Food: Home Brewing

There’s an overview of the history of the craft beer movement and homebrewing, information on equipment and ingredients, a biography of Charlie Papazian, a glossary, descriptions of styles, and a homebrewing tutorial complete with Quicktime videos showing the steps.

Granted, some of the information looks a little dated, especially the event calendar, (it appears to have first been published around 1999 or so) and the tool to look up microbreweries doesn’t work. However, the writing is very approachable from a non-beer-geek standpoint and could serve quite well as a jumping-off point for a homebrewing newbie.

Relax. Don’t worry. Have a homebrew. (WAV)

(If you are looking for craft brewers, the Open Directory Project has the most comprehensive list of brewer websites I know of.)
