Craft brewers becoming more business savvy

NEW YORK - In the days when Bud was king, craft beer brewers saw themselves as artists, not executives.

Now, with growth of craft beers dwarfing that of the mega domestic beer brands, more craft brewers are developing annual plans, assessing markets and generally behaving more like the suits at megabrewers such as Anheuser-Busch Companies Inc. and Molson Coors Brewing Co.

Small brewers’ growth a win for beer lovers

I love to hear that the Little Guys are moving up! I do wonder, what happens when they get bigger? Do they get like Shiner? That used to be a great beer, just not like it used to be.

Well, Samuel Adams has seemed to manage huge growth and the transition to a publicly-traded company without turning into A-B jr.

Of course, some beer geeks I’m acquainted with don’t like Boston Beer’s core offerings because they’re just too mainstream and “bland”.

We root for the little guy until the little guy makes it big. Then we complain that the big guy is no longer the little guy we rooted for.

How big can a craft brewer really get without changing the beer?
