Most of the time a canned beer will be fresher than a bottled beer. If you drink imported beer then it's usually a good idea to go for a can in my experience

I don't know. Perhaps they use a hop extract with artificial alpha acids instead of hop flowers (like Miller does with Miller High Life). Or they're packaged well. The sooner you see them after bottling the less chance there is for it to be lightstruck.

As for the hefe...I have no idea. I certainly haven't come across one, but then I don't encounter much hefeweizen nor much canned beer, so I'm hardly a representative sample.

Nice article, two questions that I came up with while reading it. Anyone know how Newcastle survives in a clear bottle? I have tried Corona in Europe and it was more metallic then you could have ever imagined. Has anyone ever seen or heard of a canned Hefe? Just wondering if the carbonation would be too much for the can.

I prefer Old Speckled Hen in cans rather than the bottles. It is much more flavor-stable coming from the UK.

Oskar Blues rocks. I like some of Butternuts, too. (Snapperhead IPA). I recently bought the SlyFox Pilsner in a can and don't like it at all, but I doubt it is the can.

Since the Utica Brewery lost its canning facility in a fire last summer, I wonder if they plan to upgrade it with new technology? At the time, they only canned the Utica Club and some other beer I can't think of. I'd like to see some of their High Peak series in a can.

I've had the Porkslap and didn't much care for it, but I've had Oskar Blues and enjoyed it quite a bit.

I think another issue that should be looked at is the environmental impact. (I am not a treehugger, I don't care if it is organic, but this is another issue). I believe that canning reduces the ever famous "carbon footprint" as well. Not sure, but I would be Oskar Blues people would tell you so.

I like their beer, it tastes good. That is all that matters. I would be that Jim Koch would like their beer too.
