I was presented with a great sample recently from the Beer of the Month Club. I had no idea that they offered something called The Rare Beer Club. I was given two bombers of beer that I had never had before and that is always a treat in itself, but the both these beers out

Beer-a-Day #349 Belgica—the Roman name the Low Countries—is a marriage of the best in American and Belgian brewing traditions. Belgian pilsner malt, a generous amount of American and European hops and a unique Belgian yeast strain combine to give Belgica big notes of citrus and spice, creating a lively concoction perfect for spring in the

Beer-a-Day #344 Our hop heaping IPA is a golden nectar garnering thunderous reviews. Its floral aroma strikes a harmonious blend between a sweet malt flavor and bold hop bitterness. Enjoy this thirst quenching adventure. A pretty light amber, clear with an ivory colored head. Pineapple and grapefruit aroma from the hops. Nice flavor with a

This was my second visit to Watch City Brewing in Waltham, Massachusetts, just outside of Boston. (My first trip recounts a return trip was warranted.) The bar room was not too busy, but not entirely empty early on for a Monday Night Football evening. I would have liked to stay longer, but it was a long

Beer-a-Day #327 Ten years ago we brewed our first batch of Shoals Pale Ale, our American interpretation of the traditional British ESB (Extra Special Bitter) style. At the time, it was widely considered to be darned hoppy. However, a funny thing happened over the last decade – our Shoals Pale Ale didn’t change; beer lovers

Beer-a-Day #317 I was at my favorite retailer recently and I was able to score seven craft beers in cans. I declare a “Can Week”! (But, sadly, this is the end.) Today: Brew Free or Die IPA from 21st Amendment Brewery, a famous brewpub in San Francisco that only recently started canning some of their

Beer-a-Day #316 I was at my favorite retailer recently and I was able to score seven craft beers in cans. I declare a “Can Week”! Today: IPA from Caldera Brewing a small microbrewer in Ashland Oregon and the first in Oregon to can their beer. An American-style India Pale Ale brewed with plenty of body

Beer-a-Day #303 Deep, nearly opaque amber color with a good inch of creamy-looking head. Piney and resiny aromas, with a bit of vanilla I think. Nice, big hoppy flavor with a little bit of sweetness in the finish. Oh, I’m worthy brother. Beer-a-Day #289 Sierra Nevada Torpedo Ale is a big American IPA; bold, assertive and full of flavor and aromas highlighting the complex citrus, pine and herbal character of whole-cone American hops. I’d been hearing a lot about this beer, but I wasn’t seeing it at any of my local retailers. I’m glad it came into

Beer-a-Day #287 This is a leftover from O-fest weekend. Score! Deep amber and a solid head. Piney and resiny hops; I mean, the aroma is just loaded with them. Big hoppy flavor but still just session weight. I could see myself drinking that a lot. Oh it is just so delicious. Hop fans will love Stone IPA if they have never tried it. With a nice ABV to round it off.

Interesting enough as I walked through my local supermarket – the A&P, what do I see in the beer section but multiple offerings of the Stone line. Not sure if this is a barometer of the craft beer impact that supermarkets now carry more then the mega brew and pseudo-craft beers of said megabrews OR is it a comment on (good or bad) on how once small craft beer breweries ahve grown large enough to actually have their products offered in supermarkets.

Probably a little of both. Stone has also been growing in leaps and bounds the last few years (if the numbers put out by the Brewers Association are to be believed).
