Candy store: Bier-Spezialitäten-Laden
Jun 26th
Norwegian Knut Albert is traveling in Germany and writes on his eponymous blog about a specialty shop in Berlin.

Bier-Spezialitäten-Laden
Sind sie eine Etikettensammler or ein Biergenisser, asks the man behind the counter. Are you a label collector or do you enjoy a good beer? Ein Biergenisser, I reply. When I start picking a few bottles, the other customers enthusiastically suggest others, and there is a brief discussion on whether a certain porter is sweet or not.

Candy store: Belmont Station, Portland Oregon
Apr 17th
Bill at It’s Pub Night tipped us off to a recent visit he made to Belmont Station in Portland, Oregon.

The new place is bigger, too. I mean, you could still fit three Belmont Stations into John’s Market over in Multnomah Village, but the inventory is comparable. Belmont may be missing some beers that John’s carries, especially at the low end. But there are other Portland International Brewfest sorts of choices at Belmont — Norwegian IPAs, Belgian Stouts — that I don’t see on the John’s Market list.
Another benefit of the new location is the attached pub — the Biercafe — including a few tables on the sidewalk. They only have four taps, but they keep them tasty — or, as the cafe boss Wade put it to me today, “No crap on tap”.

Candy store: Utobeer, London, England
Apr 15th
(Another unsolicited candy store.)
At their eponymous blog Boak and Bailey have touted the virtues of Utobeer in the Borough Market multiple times.
In describing their first visit…
Beer heroes of the month (June) – Utobeer, London
We went there today, for the first time. Yes, the first time – I cannot believe I have never been here before. A mixture of laziness, and suspicion of Borough market (some great food, but boy, do they charge for it…) mean that we had never got our arses over there in the past.
It was definitely worth it – I have never seen such a fantastic range of porters and stouts in one place. Reasonably priced too – we came away with 10 beers we had never had before for just over £20.

Candy store: John’s Market Place, Portland, Oregon

(Another unsolicited candy store. Maybe somebody will submit one of these to us.)
Jon at The Brew Site offers some photos of John’s Market Place he took during his Portland visit last month.
Oh! I almost forgot John’s Marketplace
These are, of course, the tip of the iceberg. There’s a lot of beer there.

Candy store: Julio’s Liquors, Westborough, Massachusetts
Mar 28th
Well, no one has yet taken us up on our call to “Show us your ‘candy store’“, but I ran across this recently.
Jason at Brewing the perfect beer waxes on about a trip to Julio’s.
This is an impressive beer store with over 900 different beers to choose from. I was about as excited as a little kid is on Christmas morning, but when I got inside, I found myself overwhelmed…(in a good way). So, after I got myself together, I browsed up and down the ailses in search of some beer.
After about 20 minutes of walking up and down the 4 ailses of beers, i realized I had no idea what I was looking for. I was just a,azed at home many different beers they had, and I wanted them all….and now!! But, cooler heads prevailed, and I paused to reflect on what I really wanted to try, and determined I wanted a little of everything.
Sounds great!

Show us your “candy store”
Dec 26th
Ron refers to his preferred beer retailer as his “candy store” and even posted pictures.
I know of what he speaks. I have stood in the middle of a liquor store, eyes agog and unsure how to start. I feel, literally, like a little kid in the middle of a candy store. “Look at all those treats! I want to try them all! But *sniff* I only have a few pennies. How do I choose?!”
How about you? We want to see your “candy store”. Take a few pictures and tell us why you love it (or hate it).
There are basically two ways for you to participate:
Send us your pictures and what you want to say about each and overall, and we’ll post it up here
or
If you have your own blog, post it there and let us know about, and we’ll link to you.
(You might want to get permission before you start snapping photos. They might think you’re a spy for the competition.)
Like a Kid in a Candy Store
Nov 21st
It’s the most wonderful time of the year…
That’s the tune that started going through my head as browsed my local candy store (er, beverage center) for some great beers for the holidays. I have been thrilled with how the store continues to expand the craft and imported beer section. (sometimes I think that with the amount of money I spend there, they are expanding it just for me) This is by far the best selection in the area and the owner and employees are all great, friendly and helpful.
I also had my new phone with me and I thought I might be able to find a good use for having a camera on a cell phone. Now you get to join me on my shopping trip…
Look at this rack of goodness!

I’m not sure what all this stuff is, but it is unique and promotes the love of beer, so it’s all good.

Here are the imports. (I wasn’t drinking, I swear.)

Interesting stuff… Otter Creek’s Winter Ale and Paulaner hefe-kegs. (and enough Bud to float a yacht)

MMMMmmmmmm… Double Bastard Ale!

My wife loves those brown ales and her latest favorite from Ithica is all out! (which reminds me, I need to blog about our weekend in the Finger Lakes)

Michalob Ultra from New York…? I don’t think so…

This is new here… Hop Hazzard, oh, I’ve got to try that!

He said he would do it and it is finally here! Brown’s in bottles!

Get ‘em before they are banned!

I’ll take one of those… and one of those… (bonus to anyone who can figure out what I bought – but it will be tough because I reduced these photos)

There’s more selection than this, too. I’ll have to do this again.
