Great Divide Belgica

Beer-a-Day #349 Great Divide Belgica

Belgica—the Roman name the Low Countries—is a marriage of the best in American and Belgian brewing traditions. Belgian pilsner malt, a generous amount of American and European hops and a unique Belgian yeast strain combine to give Belgica big notes of citrus and spice, creating a lively concoction perfect for spring in the Rockies—or the Ardennes.

Pale yellow with a beefy white head. I can definitely smell the promised citrus and spice; especially cloves. Flavor is heavier than I expected, with a flavor a bit like roasted apricots in the finish. That’s not bad, but at 7.2% ABV is probably a bit bigger than I would generally have to wile away a Spring afternoon.

Flying Dog Raging Bitch

One of the highlights of GonzoFest yesterday was the preview of Flying Dog’s upcoming 20th anniversary beer: Raging Bitch.

I understand it’s made from an augmented Snake Dog wort with an exclusive Belgian yeast strain (called Diablo) and dry-hopped with a load of Amarillo hops. They’re calling it a Belgian IPA.

It was really good. It had that hop bite from a big, bad American IPA with the banana and bubblegum from the Belgian yeast. I’m looking forward to seeing it at my preferred retailer.

Flying Dog Woody Creek White

Woody Creek WhiteBeer-a-Day #164

Our tribute to the town we consider to be “Gonzo Ground Zero”… Woody Creek White is a traditional Belgian-style Wit Beer, brewed with unique ingredients like orange peel and coriander, resulting in a refreshing and slightly citrus flavor, perfect for the “Dog Days of Summer”.

Pale and hazy, with a white head. Spicy and floral aroma. Crisp, with lemon zest, cloves, and a little bubblegum.

Weyerbacher QUAD

Well, I might as well stick to Weyerbacher for a bit longer. They’re not too far away, being just up in Easton, Pennsylvania (home of Crayola Crayons!).

The Weyerbacher folks suggest cellaring it for 12 months or more. I’m not that patient.

Orangeish, with haze. Aroma is overwhelmingly of bananas and bubblegum. Sweet, and there’s some heat from the 11.8% alcohol-by-volume. Something to savor, and I can see where this could mellow nicely over time.
