Evolution Exile ESB

I’m always* on the lookout for new local beers. I’d never heard of Evolution Craft Brewing, but Delaware is only a hop, skip and a jump away.

ESB tends to be my favorite style. What better way to introduce myself to a new brewer?

They say:

Light amber in color, assertively hopped but well balanced. Fruity and aromatic, generously dry hopped with Cascades and East Kent Goldings. 48 IBUs, 5.8 ABV. Brewed to pair with a big fatty steak or spicy dish.

I say:

Its color is golden amber, very much like honey**. The aroma reminds me very much of toast with a good amount of grassy hops. I really like the mouthfeel of this one. The flavor is full without being too heavy, and it has a really nice bitter finish. I really like this.

* Okay. When I happen to be in a beer store.

** Although having been to the county fair recently, my wife reminds me that honey comes in every color of beer.

Boont Extra Special Beer

Beer-a-Day #281Boont Extra Special Beer

The abundant hopping in this four-time gold medal winner, creates arousing aromatics, accompanied by a pleasantly bitter bite. Boont Extra Special Beer is deep gold in color, with a spicy hop aroma. Starts with a big, malty backbone and finishes with a refreshingly bitter bite. Boont Extra Special Beer is excellent alone or as an accompaniment to your favorite well-seasoned meals (such as Mexican, Korean, Chinese, Indian, or Thai, cuisine).

(Formerly Belk’s ESB)

Medium amber with an ivory head and haze. Floral and spice in the aroma. Medium body with a nice full hop flavor. (Ron, you’d like this too.) This is my kind of beer. 6.8% ABV is a bit high for me to make it my usual though.

Stoudt’s Scarlet Lady Ale

Stoudt's Scarlet Lady labelBeer-a-Day #169

This English-style ale is brewed with Marris Otter and Caramel malts for a rich, reddish-copper color and smooth maly palate. The use of bittering & aroma addition hops balances the regal, sweet maltiness and imparts a softly perfumed aroma.

ESB is one of my favorite styles, and I’ve always had a weakness for redheads.

A lovely medium-dark amber with a beige head. Caramel malty goodness in the aroma. Nicely balanced with a just-right body. This is good stuff.

Barons ESB

Barons ESBBeer-a-Day #102

Extra Special Bitter is my “go-to” style. After being disappointed by a few bottles from England that didn’t survive the trip, I’ve looked in the other direction for one from Australia.

Golden color; a little hazy. Not much head. Slight aroma, with a bit of citrus from the hops. Medium body, with a bit of a burnt-toast flavor in the finish

Lakefront Brewery Organic E.S.B.

So, after enjoying the five Lakefront Cherry Lagers that strangely found themselves in the six-pack basket of Lakefront Organic E.S.B. I bought, I decided I should try what I’d actually set out to buy.

They say:

One of the few beers brewed in the world using 100% certified organic ingredients. A classic British style Extra Special Bitter that is amber in color with cascade hop flavor that gives it a refreshing taste.

Pours a nice golden color with some red highlights. Head is modest and quickly reduces to a small layer of foam.

Aroma is biscuity. It’s medium-bodied, with a good amount of carbonation. There’s a distinctive fruitiness in the finish (pears?) and a nice bit of hop bite on the end.

Pretty darn good, and rather refreshing on these recent 100-degree days.
