Great Divide Belgica
Dec 15th
Belgica—the Roman name the Low Countries—is a marriage of the best in American and Belgian brewing traditions. Belgian pilsner malt, a generous amount of American and European hops and a unique Belgian yeast strain combine to give Belgica big notes of citrus and spice, creating a lively concoction perfect for spring in the Rockies—or the Ardennes.
Pale yellow with a beefy white head. I can definitely smell the promised citrus and spice; especially cloves. Flavor is heavier than I expected, with a flavor a bit like roasted apricots in the finish. That’s not bad, but at 7.2% ABV is probably a bit bigger than I would generally have to wile away a Spring afternoon.
Great Divide Oak Aged Yeti

Beer-a-Day #299
…Yeti Imperial Stout’s sophisticated sibling. They may be from the same clan, but they have entirely different personalities. Oak aging gives a subtle vanilla character, rounding out Yeti’s intense roastiness and huge hoppy nature. Who says you can’t tame a Yeti? (9.5% ABV)
Pours as dark and thick as used engine oil; the head looks like a chocolate milkshake. Lots of nice roastiness with some vanilla in the aroma. You can really taste the oak. That’s some good stuff.
Great Divide Claymore Scotch Ale
Mar 17th
Colored like molasses, and nearly as thick. A thick head with the distinct color of spackle. Big malty aroma. Sweet and smooth and big. Very hearty. I like it.
Great Divide Hercules Double IPA
Mar 16th
Nice caramel in color, with some haze; off-white head. Aroma is very rich, with plenty of piney and citrusy notes from the hops. Lots of hop kick and a big malty mouthful. Certainly something to savor. I like it.
Great Divide Wild Raspberry Ale

Beer-a-Day #31
The last, for the moment, from Great Divide Brewing.
We have a bit of a love/hate relationship with fruit beer. I always feel it’s a bit of a crapshoot when I go out on a limb to try one. I am heartened that they use real raspberries rather than extracts or syrup.
Deep amber with a quickly dissipating head. Raspberry in the aroma, obviously. A bit of underlying maltiness. The raspberry flavor is not overly sweet or overpowering. This could be quite refreshing on a hot day.

Great Divide Denver Pale Ale (DPA)

Beer-a-Day #30
Continuing to sample selections from Great Divide Brewing.
Great Divide describes their DPA as a classic English style pale ale. That sounds right up my alley.
Medium yellow in color; white head. Grassy and biscuity aroma. A lot of lingering bitterness from the hops.
Great Divide Samurai Ale

I enjoyed the Titan IPA, Saint Bridget’s Porter, and especially the Yeti Imperial Stout, so I picked up a bunch more from Great Divide.
This one is uses rice as well as barley and is unfiltered. What an uncommon combination.
Very pale yellow with no head to speak of. It’s a bit hazy, being unfiltered and all.
(My wife, the nursing student, says that it looks exactly like urine from someone who had better go see a doctor.)
The aroma is light; slightly floral. Mouthfeel and flavor are also light, obviously from the rice.
This didn’t thrill me. It would probably be rather refreshing on a hot day, though.
Great Divide Titan IPA

Beer-a-Day #20
A medium, clear yellow with plenty of off-white head. Grassy and grapefruity hop aroma. A bit of nuttiness in the flavor and nice bitterness in the finish.

(The label on my bottle is all messed up, so I couldn’t get a good picture. This photo is of the old label from the Great Divide web site.)
Saint Bridget’s Porter – Great Divide Brewing
Jan 16th
Beer-a-Day #16
After a prompt from James, I decided to grab this when I saw it.
Pours a nice deep brown with a tan head. Plenty of nutty roastiness in the aroma, some fruitiness, a bit of chocolate. More nuttiness in the flavor. Pretty good.

Beer-a-Day #14
“Imposing” and “Untamed” trumpets the label.
Pours an inky brown with a dark brown head. Caramel and a bit of coffee in the aroma. It smells rich. Nice roasted flavor with a surprising amount of bitterness at the end. I really like this. This will certainly become a regular visitor.
