Great Divide 17th Anniversary Wood Aged Double IPA

I love my wife. She buys me interesting things like this.

They say:

Based on our award-winning beer, Denver Pale Ale, this copper-hued treat is a celebration of everything Great Divide does best. Plenty of malty sweetness provides a backdrop of earthy, floral English and American hops, while French and American oak round off the edges and provide a touch of vanilla.

Nice copper color; not much head. A good bit of pine in the aroma, with a bit of that vanilla. That’s got some nice bite. I like this.

Great Divide Belgica

Beer-a-Day #349 Great Divide Belgica

Belgica—the Roman name the Low Countries—is a marriage of the best in American and Belgian brewing traditions. Belgian pilsner malt, a generous amount of American and European hops and a unique Belgian yeast strain combine to give Belgica big notes of citrus and spice, creating a lively concoction perfect for spring in the Rockies—or the Ardennes.

Pale yellow with a beefy white head. I can definitely smell the promised citrus and spice; especially cloves. Flavor is heavier than I expected, with a flavor a bit like roasted apricots in the finish. That’s not bad, but at 7.2% ABV is probably a bit bigger than I would generally have to wile away a Spring afternoon.

Great Divide Oak Aged Yeti

Beer-a-Day #299Great Divide Oak Aged Yeti

…Yeti Imperial Stout’s sophisticated sibling. They may be from the same clan, but they have entirely different personalities. Oak aging gives a subtle vanilla character, rounding out Yeti’s intense roastiness and huge hoppy nature. Who says you can’t tame a Yeti?  (9.5% ABV)

Pours as dark and thick as used engine oil; the head looks like a chocolate milkshake. Lots of nice roastiness with some vanilla in the aroma. You can really taste the oak. That’s some good stuff.

Great Divide Wild Raspberry Ale

Great Divide Wild Raspberry Ale

Beer-a-Day #31

The last, for the moment, from Great Divide Brewing.

We have a bit of a love/hate relationship with fruit beer. I always feel it’s a bit of a crapshoot when I go out on a limb to try one. I am heartened that they use real raspberries rather than extracts or syrup.

Deep amber with a quickly dissipating head. Raspberry in the aroma, obviously. A bit of underlying maltiness. The raspberry flavor is not overly sweet or overpowering. This could be quite refreshing on a hot day.

Great Divide Samurai Ale

Great Divide Samurai AleBeer-a-Day #29

I enjoyed the Titan IPA, Saint Bridget’s Porter, and especially the Yeti Imperial Stout, so I picked up a bunch more from Great Divide.

This one is uses rice as well as barley and is unfiltered. What an uncommon combination.

Very pale yellow with no head to speak of. It’s a bit hazy, being unfiltered and all.

(My wife, the nursing student, says that it looks exactly like urine from someone who had better go see a doctor.)

The aroma is light; slightly floral. Mouthfeel and flavor are also light, obviously from the rice.

This didn’t thrill me. It would probably be rather refreshing on a hot day, though.

Great Divide Titan IPA

Great Divide Titan IPA (old label)Beer-a-Day #20

A medium, clear yellow with plenty of off-white head. Grassy and grapefruity hop aroma. A bit of nuttiness in the flavor and nice bitterness in the finish.
