Sierra Nevada Kellerweis

Beer-a-Day #291Sierra Nevada Kellerweis

Kellerweis is one of the only American Hefeweizens made using the traditional Bavarian style of open fermentation. This difficult and labor-intensive technique adds uncommon depth and flavor complexity. Our hazy-golden hefeweizen is deeply flavorful, refreshing and perfect for a sunny day. To serve, pour two-thirds into a glass, swirl and pour the rest.

The sun came out today for the first time it a week.

Hazy gold with a big fluffy white head. Spicy wheat aroma. Fruity and spicy taste. For a hefeweizen I’d say this is pretty spot on.

Pyramid Haywire Hefeweizen

Beer-a-Day #212Pyramid Haywire Hefeweizen

The standard by which all other wheat beers are judged. Our deliciously deranged American-Style Hefeweizen is an award winning take on this Bavarian classic. This refreshingly unfiltered wheat ale delivers a distinctively smooth flavor worth sharing with friends.

There were huge delays on the commuter train today, giving me the opportunity to stand around in 90+ degree heat for over an hour, to sit between two other hot and tired commuters for another hour-and-a-half, and to get home over two hours late. I deserve this beer.

Dark yellow with typical wheat haze. Banana and cloves in the aroma. A little bready in the flavor, but otherwise a nice, crisp hefeweizen. Refreshing. I’d gladly have this again.

Flying Dog In-Heat Wheat

Flying Dog In-Heat WheatBeer-a-Day #192

Well, what do you know? For all that I like Flying Dog and all that I like wheat beers (Hi Max!), I’ve never written this one up. And, since Cork 57 was doing a promotion for the Flying Dog tasting the other day, I picked up a six-pack.

She taunts and teases… In-Heat Wheat is our German-style Hefeweizen. She is a full flavor beer, perfect for the more adventurous craft beer drinker. The addition of malted white wheat gives this brew its smooth, full mouthfeel. A proprietary yeast creates intriguing flavors of bananas and cloves.

Yellowish-orange and hazy. Bananas and cloves as well as some apples in the aroma. Smooth with that fruitiness. Refreshing, to be sure.

Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier

Weihenstephaner Hefe WeissbierBeer-a-Day #181

Nothing refreshes you more than this naturally cloudy wheat beer with its wonderful yeasty fragrance and taste. Goes well with dishes that do not have too intensive a flavour, especially that Bavarian speciality ‘Weisswurst’ or white sausage.

Hazy yellow with copious head. Floral with a little bubblegum. I’m not generally down with the wheat beers, but that’s a darn good one. That is in the top five best wheat beers I’ve ever had. Sadly, I only have the one.

Widmer Update

widmer hefeweizenOn my recent trip to Austin Texas I saw the Widmer Hefeweizen on tap which I know I’ve had before but it was so long ago that I don’t even remember it. I reviewed the Widmer Drifter back in January and really loved it so I just had to try a tall glass of the Hefeweizen. I’m glad I did. It was great – it was a bright golden yellow with a thick chill haze. The citrus hop and yeast aroma was delightful and the taste that followed was refreshing and well balanced. One of the best wheat beers I’ve ever had.

I recalled that distribution of Widmer to the northeastern U.S. was very spotty, even though I was told otherwise, but I was in for a pleasant surprise when I returned home. When I took a trip to restock my beer from my local candy store I found new candy. Widmer’s Drifter, Hefeweizen, and Top Dog Amber were sitting the shelf. They were also reasonably priced.

I grabbed the Drifter (my new “go to”) and the amber which I found to be very nice, just not my favorite style. I’ve already gone back for more of the Hefeweizen (which they have carried in the past, by the way) because it is such a great summer beer.

Now if I could only get my hands on their Broken Halo IPA…

UFO Hefeweizen – Harpoon’s UnFiltered Offering

Harpoon UFO HefeweizenBeer-a-Day #68

I first encountered this beer at a Super Bowl party. It’s been around since 1998, but only started getting distributed in this area fairly recently. From what I’ve read about it, it’s designed to compete with Coors’ Blue Moon Belgian White.

It’s a very pale straw color and predictably hazy. The aroma is so slight as to be almost non-existent, but I do detect just a wee bit of that wheat spiciness. It’s very light on the tongue with a clean finish. Fans of copious hops or high gravity beers will be disappointed, but it’s refreshing and one or three of these on a hot day will certainly hit the spot.
