Beer News

Zymurgy, the magazine of the American Homebrewers Association, polled their subscribers, crunched the numbers and came up with a list of the fifty best beers in the U.S.

Beervana, Jeff Alworth’s blog, pointed us toward some information about Oregon beer. Not only are there a lot of breweries there, but they make a lot of beer, and a lot of it stays in-state. Lots and lots of numbers.

Speaking of Oregon, the Beer Bloggers Conference is coming around again in August. Golly, but we wish we could go. The agenda isn’t yet set, but some of the panels they’ve announced look really interesting.

Beer 2.0

We check out a new (to us) beer recommendation engine: Pintley. It’s a well-done site and after rating a few beers it offers up some good recommendations. There are also iPhone and Android apps, as well as a mobile-optimized website. You can friend us, too. HopTalkRon and HopTalkAl. (Perhaps soon HopTalkMatt as well.) Although we’re not quite sure what to make of the TechCrunch review.

Contest

Don’t forget we’re running a contest to win a free Headcase combination iPhone case and bottle opener.

Hopworks Beer Bike

Imagine if you will a bicycle modified to hold two kegs, two custom taps, an inlaid wood bar (with easy access to the kegs), a sound system, and a rack capable of carrying three large pizza pies.

“Crazy!” you say? Feast your eyes:

This melding of passions was created by Metrofiets, a Portland, Oregon outfit that makes customized artisan cargo bikes. They made it for Christian Ettinger, the owner and brewmaster of Hopworks Urban Brewery.

Oppresive beer tax in Oregon

Whether you think Oregon is “beervana”, there is no denying that Oregon is huge in the craft beer world.

So why would a state legislator propose a 1900% increase in the beer excise tax? Okay, Oregon’s current tax is one of the lowest in the nation, but still. And why only beer? As usual, the increased funds are supposed to go for drug and alcohol abuse programs. What, alcoholics only drink beer?

Stoopid.

Candy store: Belmont Station, Portland Oregon

Bill at It’s Pub Night tipped us off to a recent visit he made to Belmont Station in Portland, Oregon.

Next Stop, Belmont Station

Belmont Station beer selection

The new place is bigger, too. I mean, you could still fit three Belmont Stations into John’s Market over in Multnomah Village, but the inventory is comparable. Belmont may be missing some beers that John’s carries, especially at the low end. But there are other Portland International Brewfest sorts of choices at Belmont — Norwegian IPAs, Belgian Stouts — that I don’t see on the John’s Market list.

Another benefit of the new location is the attached pub — the Biercafe — including a few tables on the sidewalk. They only have four taps, but they keep them tasty — or, as the cafe boss Wade put it to me today, “No crap on tap”.

Have a beer with the candidate

Candidate for Oregon Senate Steve Novick has an interesting idea to garner name recognition, seem like a “regular guy”, and help people get past his prosthesis.

He’s commissioned a beer.

The Oregonian: Senate candidate Novick has a beer brewed to recognize his hook hand prosthesis

(AP) Like all politicians, Oregon Senate hopeful Steve Novick wants to be seen as the kind of guy you’d like to have a beer with.

And Novick hopes it’s a “Left Hook Lager,” a beer concocted for the campaign by a Eugene-based brewery and named in honor of the metal prosthesis the candidate sports in lieu of his left hand.

According to an e-mail sent to supporters, Left Hook Lager will be served at events in Eugene and Portland around St. Patrick’s Day. Novick fans and beer enthusiasts can also reserve a bottle or a case, to be picked up and paid for at campaign headquarters on the permitted dates.

I like it.

Anyone know who the brewer actually is?
