Starr Hill Festie

Beer-a-Day #272Starr Hill Festie

Rich and malty, Festie is available in September and October, and is our tribute to the great German lager. Its name invokes the German tradition of Oktoberfest, while also paying homage to the end of the summer music festival season.

I’m really beginning to like what I’ve been having from Starr Hill. After having never seen them ever, I’m now seeing them all over the place.

Medium gold color. Soft, malty aroma. Lighter than I was expecting. Still, it’s pretty good. I’d gladly have this again.

Starr Hill Pale Ale

Starr Hill Pale AleBeer-a-Day #194

Starr Hill Pale Ale is another award-winning, medium-bodied, year-round favorite. Creating a fresh spin on the English Pale Ale tradition, Master Brewer Mark Thompson uses liberal hopping and Munich malt to create a crisp, aromatic blend with a bit of bite. This brew has a higher alcohol content to balance its body and bitterness.

Medium amber with a finger’s worth of head. Nice aroma with fruit and flowers. Mmmm…that’s good.

Starr Hill Northern Lights

I’ve only recently discovered this Virginia brewer, and my retailer had a bunch more styles in. IPA is probably my favorite style.

Northern Lights is an extra-special India Pale Ale that is available from January through April. Characterized by its full-flavored bitterness and floral aroma, a perfect blend of barley and hops make this a very balanced IPA. For the craftbrew connoisseur, Northern Lights is a deliciously crafted piece of the heavens.

Amber color with orange highlights; copious head. Loads of hops in the aroma. Grassy, grapefruity, spicy. Plenty more hops in the finish. This is a hophead’s beer.
