Yuengling on NPR

I’m a fan a D.G. Yuengling & Son. Since it’s the first brewery I ever toured it will always have special place in my heart. And, of course, I’m an NPR junkie. And on a recent Morning Edition, these two things intersected.

Yuengling, Oldest U.S. Beer Maker, Eyes Expansion

When you think American beer, you might think Budweiser, or Miller. But neither of those is American-owned anymore. Like many big-name brews, they’ve been bought up by overseas companies.

One of the biggest American beer makers is a lesser-known regional beer company, D.G. Yuengling and Son — the country’s oldest beer maker. Founded by a German immigrant in Pennsylvania 181 years ago, it’s still run by the Yuengling family, and it’s still growing.

It’s worth a listen.

Yuengling Bock Beer

I had in-laws visiting for the Memorial Day weekend last week. We took them around to see the sights, including a trip to Washington, D.C.

They brought me beer.

Better yet, they brought me beer I’d never seen before.

Yuengling brewed their Bock last year to celebrate their 180th anniversary and it was only available in kegs. They hadn’t done a Bock in over 40 years. It was so popular that they brought it back this year, and now in bottles.

The label art is even based on the original artwork from 1941. I love the retro look.

Medium golden brown, clear, with a thick head the color of linen. The aroma is light, but becomes more prevalent as it warms. Malty. A touch of vanilla perhaps? Mouthfeel is fairly thick, though perhaps not as much as I expected. Malty with a little nuttiness. This is pretty good.

Some other impressions from around the beer-o-sphere:

Yuengling Lager

Yuengling LagerBeer-a-Day #21

I attended a holiday party this evening for my division in the company. (Yes, I know that it’s the end of January.) The party was at Dave & Buster’s.

The beer selection was pretty barren. There were your typical Bud Light, Coors Light, Miller Lite. And, of course, their foreign counterparts: Stella Artois, Harp Lager, Corona Extra.

There was Sam Adams Boston lager and Sam Adams Light in bottles, but they seemed more a token.

Thankfully, they had Yuengling Lager on tap.

I never considered it that dark a beer, but compared to my boss’s Miller Lite it was obvious.

And mighty tasty while I proceeded to lose at pool and post a poor showing racing a NASCAR car. At least I did well with the trivia game. Too bad Skeeball was broken.

Biofuel boom sparks beer price fight
As German barley farmers abandon their usual crops in favor of subsidized biofuel crops, like corn (maize), brewers scramble to keep costs in line to prevent alienating their consumers.

Brewery workers walk off job
More than 100 workers of the Canadian Autoworkers Union walked off the job early at Edmonton’s Molson Coors brewery the morning of May 30. While the company says it has plenty of supply, union leaders think beer drinkers in Western Canada may have a bit of a time of it this summer.

Quick Tip: Leftover Beer
Not that this would ever happen to any of us, but leftover beer can be used to give some extra nutrients to your plants.

Teamsters brewing boycott of Yuengling beer
A typical “he said, he said” scenario. Yuengling workers vote to leave the union. Teamsters strike. Marketplace yawns. The Teamsters claim management threatened to shut down the company and want lawmakers to intervene. The company says that workers decided to decertify on their own.
